Songs of Joy – Daily Scripture Reading

Daily Scripture

Lord, change our circumstances for the better,
like dry streams in the desert waste!
Let those who plant with tears
reap the harvest with joyful shouts.
Let those who go out,
crying and carrying their seed,
come home with joyful shouts,
carrying bales of grain! – Psalm 126:4-6

Daily Devotional

Today’s Devotional was written by: Cheryl Cash

This passage has long been a deep hope and comfort for me. The tears we have cried! At every airport. At every last hug when furlough concludes. Every niece and nephew born a world away from us. Every hospital stay that our family faces and we are not physically present to pour the coffee and hold the hands. “Those who go out weeping . . .” I love my Stateside family and leaving them has always carried increasing heartbreak. It never gets easier.

We do it for those sheaves! We hope into that harvest. Back when we began to serve in Uganda I imagined we would see those sheaves presently. I truly did. And we have been blessed to wrap some harvest sheaves. But God had more. Immeasurably more. Not just among the Tooro, or even all around Eastern Africa. But around my table. In the hearts of my kids. In the souls of our own family. Those nieces and nephews. All the ones we have let go of.

We will return together with songs of joy. Just like the floods of the Negev desert. We will see blooms in unexpected places! It’s a promise. One I’m holding to, dancing through, and celebrating. To God be the glory!

“Those who walk the fields to sow, casting their seed in tears,
will one day tread those same long rows, amazed by what’s appeared.” (Psalm 126:5 The Voice)

Read this verse in context: Psalm 103:1-22

When the Lord changed Zion’s circumstances for the better,
it was like we had been dreaming.
2 Our mouths were suddenly filled with laughter;
our tongues were filled with joyful shouts.
It was even said, at that time, among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them!”
3 Yes, the Lord has done great things for us,
and we are overjoyed.
4 Lord, change our circumstances for the better,
like dry streams in the desert waste!
5 Let those who plant with tears
reap the harvest with joyful shouts.
6 Let those who go out,
crying and carrying their seed,
come home with joyful shouts,
carrying bales of grain!
